The smell from this yoga mat is toxic! I’m not sure why my experience was so much worse than the other reviewers, but I cannot recommend this mat. I tried airing out the mat outdoors (couldn’t for more than a few hours as I live in a harsh winter climate, it was snowing, and am apartment city dweller) and washed it twice, but NOTHING would get rid of the smell. The smell made my sinuses burn and swell. HORRIBLE!!!! I ended up throwing it out because it was making me ill.

Perhaps if you lived somewhere where you could keep the mat outdoors for several days, this would not be an issue for you. Unfortunately, this was not an option for me.

  2. I have been searching for the perfect yoga mat for quite some time. I found this one about 18 months ago and am ordering another one to replace it with EXACTLY the same mat, which I have never done! It held up VERY well, since I use it 5 days per week. Below are the reasons I think it is the BEST!

    1. Good thickness to cushion the body on hard surfaces, but not too thick to not feel “grounded.”

    2. The bottom surface is smooth, but really does stay put on the floor.

    3. The top surface is not as “sticky” as some other mats, but has held me in place because of the “squishiness” AND the FANTASTIC tread-like raised design in green against the orange-yellow background.

    4. The “architecture” of my asanas has improved because the grid-like pattern really allows me to properly align myself, regardless of the position. After using this as a tool for almost 2 years, I really can get great alignment with my eyes closed!

    5. The orange-yellow psychdelic-type pattern reminds me of the late 60’s and early 70’s.

The mat does initially have a rubber odor but it wore off quickly with daily use. I have never had a static issue. 3 other people who regularly take Sunrise Yoga with me also have the mat in either of the colors and love it. My only wish is that Gaiam would add other patterns-colors to this particular mat so I can keep updating my look, but for now I am ordering the EXACT SAME MAT!

I really like my new mat and haven’t had any issues with odor/smell as some reviewers. I bought this particular mat for a couple of reasons, first being the eco friendly materials, secondly the color/pattern and the reviews on here. My only complaint is it’s a tad thin, especially on my knees, but there are ways to work around this. Am really happy with my purchase and would recommend to any buyer

I thought I was getting a great yoga mat, but as soon as I started using it in yoga class, I went back to my original Gaiam yoga mat. The Oasis mat smelled horribly of rubber (not a good thing in the child’s or dog poses), but worst of all, I kept slipping on the mat and I strained my body in trying to stay in place. Also, the mat kept sliding on the floor making my ability to stay upright even harder. The Premium sticky mat (the striped one) performed much better and costs significantly less even though I’m still looking for a better non-slip mat. Don’t waste your money on the Oasis.

At first I liked this mat a lot. It was summer and it was pretty to look at and held the floor well. Then came the fall. I started sliding all over and recently my teacher almost took at header as he stepped on it.

I called Gaiam and they suggested I wash it in vinegar or return it. I tried the vinegar since returning a product several months after purchase/use isn’t an option. The vinegar helped remove the residual odor but made no difference on the slipping.

Don’t waste money on this mat. I also thought that Gaiam would have done more and was disappointed at how they handled this situation.

I see from some other reviews that I’m not alone. Maybe this mat is good for gentle/restorative yoga but it doesn’t seem to be able to handle holding the floor for a strong/moving practice.
